How much can I earn as a driving instructor?

The majority of driving instructors in the UK operate on a self-employed basis, even when they are attached to a driving school. The driving instructor keeps all of the driving lesson money and has to pay his expenses out of this. Driving lessons are typically £23 per hour on a pay as you go basis, with discounts for student daytime lessons and block payments. The advantage of block payments is that if the pupil doesn't show for the lesson you still get paid.

The expenses a driving instructor typically has to pay for on a weekly basis are car, fuel, marketing and insurance. If attached to a driving school then some of these will be paid to the school. Examples of different options are given below:

Full Time Driving School Franchise with Bradleys

In this case you can work as many hours a week as you want and the car and insurance are provided as a part of the 'franchise' as are pupils. You are allowed and encouraged to take on your own pupils. Wear and tear, tax, service and replacement car in the event of an accident are included. Fuel is not.

Gross earnings here would typically be £890 per week or £605 per week after expenses. This is based on 40 hours of paid lessons per week, full time franchise fee of £205 and fuel of £80 which is the Bradleys average. The average lesson price used is £22.25 which is our average taking into account discounts. Don't forget on top of these earnings you get a nice shiny car.

Part Time Driving School Franchise with Bradleys

For the part time franchise, everything is the same except that the maximum hours per week you would work would be 25. This will be suitable for people with child care to organise, or people with school age children who can only work between school hours and maybe a few hours at the weekend. You would still get a nice shiny car for the whole week.

Gross earnings here would be £556 per week or £341 per week after expenses for 25 hours of paid lessons per week. In this case the franchise fee is £165 and the approximate fuel required would be £50 based on Bradleys averages.

Own Car Franchise with Bradleys

For people who already have a suitable car or who have one which they would fit dual controls (approx cost £300) and then use, we operate an own car franchise. In this case there is no limit to the number of hours you can work. The car should be less than 3 years old and suitable for giving driving tuition. Driving instructor insurance is required, the cost of which will depend on your driving history, but will typically be £10-£12 per week. The cost of an own car franchise with Bradleys is £65 per week.

In this case earnings would be £506 for a 25 hour week and £810 for a 40 hour week, after fuel cost but less any cost for the car and insurance.

Employed Positions at Bradleys

For the right type of people Bradleys can offer employed positions as a driving instructor. If you are already qualified as an ADI we have an evaluation process you will be required to undertake to establish whether we can offer you this. If you enrol on a Bradleys training course and wish to be considered for an employed position you should make this known to the Senior Course Adviser when you enrol and the evaluation will take place while you are on the course. You will also be given extra training to assist you with this. There is no extra cost for this.

There are pros and cons regarding the self-employed / employed roles and we will be happy to discuss these with you on an individual basis.
